Laura's Letter: Fall 2008

Fall is the season for football, baseball, cool fall breezes and going back to classes. It is a time to reflect and rededicate ourselves to our missions and purpose in life.  As a parent of 2 kids now in college, and a health educator of a very exciting fitness and food program for teens, I can’t help but pause and comment on the fact that these are changing times that we all live in! The war in Iraq, the upcoming election, the crashing economic markets - all the political debates, the extremes that exist in unison as the world spins! I begin to worry about the future; yet, I have always believed that there is no time like the present.

We each face our individual battles, struggles, and missions. One of mine is help be a part of the solution to prevent a childhood sedentary lifestyle condition which at the very least has children sitting too much and not getting the necessary 1 hour a day of recommended exercise for healthy growth and development. At the other end of the spectrum is the outcome of: type 2 diabetes, hypertension and obesity all happening before our kids reach adulthood! As a healthcare professional and educator for youth,   I believe that we are positioned at a place in the American culture where we can choose to take better care of ourselves and our children.

I come from a family with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and various addictive behaviors. It is no accident that I have strived to make the world a better place. I have had multiple educational experiences, first as a registered nurse, next as a certified personal trainer and now as a recent graduate 2007 with my degree in Culinary Arts as a chef. My life has been all about working with people to achieve optimum health and wellness.

It is my personal vision to make FLY Fitness a premier after school fitness and wellness program model for today’s American high school student. Simply put, FLY Fitness works. It transforms the lives of the students that take part in their own journey towards personal fitness. FLY Fitness offers a program where diversity is central- the non-athletic artist, the shy quiet computer-biology kid, the off season football or basketball player - all have a place in the FLY Fitness program. Our mission is to teach Fitness as a Lifestyle for our Youth. We see the mix of students from different walks of life and different socio-economic groups all excel and develop life skills of what it takes to be healthy and fit. They learn individually in a coed group setting at their school.

Take this as your invitation to join us this year as we are looking for like minded individual trainers, chefs, educators and concerned parents and students. We welcome your stories of what you are doing to teach wellness and fitness to the youth in your community. Add us to your list of internet favorites and contact us. Together we can help raise a healthy and fit next generation of youth.

Sincerely yours,

Laura Kahn, R.N.
